Half Dollar Dog Unleash Their Inner Rage with New Single “Oil on Fire”

Some bands are looking for perfection. Others would rather turn their frustrations into noise. Half Dollar Dog belong firmly to the second category. The French grunge band return with “Oil on Fire”, a powerful new single that dives headfirst into anger, betrayal and the explosive emotions that emerge when everything gets out of control.

Despite its title, the song has nothing to do with the current tensions in the Middle East or the ups and downs of oil prices. Its fire is much more personal: the kind of rage that lies dormant beneath the surface, waiting for the right spark. Fuelled by betrayal, fear, misunderstandings and resentment, “Oil on Fire” captures the moment when anger finally breaks loose.

Back to the Raw Energy of 90s Grunge

With their sixth single, Half Dollar Dog return to their grungy roots, embracing a heavier, noisier sound reminiscent of the Seattle scene and the alternative rock of the 1990s.

“Oil on Fire” hits hard. Its powerful riffs and raw intensity feel like a slap in the face for anyone standing too close to the speakers. This is not music designed to sound flawless or polished; it is music built to communicate something real.

That approach has been at the heart of Half Dollar Dog since the beginning. Their sound brings together the rough edges of grunge, the attitude of punk and traces of shoegaze, deliberately blurring the boundaries between genres. The result is a sound that refuses to sit comfortably in any single box.

A Band That Refuses to Give Up

Half Dollar Dog began in February 2021, when Hugo and Xavier found themselves facing similar personal setbacks. Hugo had been left alone in an almost empty home, with nothing but an acoustic guitar his former girlfriend had disliked hearing him play. Across the Rhône, Xavier had returned after 25 years in Ireland, carrying his own share of disappointment.

An online musicians' advert brought the two together. What followed was a musical outlet for frustration, loneliness and the uneasy feeling of not quite fitting into adult life.

The road has rarely been straightforward. Line-up changes, repeated setbacks and the departure of their drummer just three weeks before recording their first album could easily have brought the project to an end. Instead, the band booked a studio in Marseille and went ahead with a session drummer.

Their first album, “The Wrong Turn”, is scheduled for release in January 2027. Its first single, “Empty”, arrived in October 2025, introducing listeners to the band's raw, distinctly grunge-driven world.

An Anthem for the Misfits

For Half Dollar Dog, making music is about refusing to accept a life stripped of colour, flavour and meaning. They are not chasing the next big alternative-rock breakthrough with a carefully polished image or a ready-made sales pitch. They are building something more personal: an identity shaped by contradictions, imperfections and the determination to keep moving forward.

“The Wrong Turn” is intended for wandering dogs, outsiders, misfits and anyone who has ever felt left behind. It is an album about human contradiction, and its deliberately unpolished sound reflects that spirit.

With “Oil on Fire”, Half Dollar Dog turn that same attitude into a burst of musical fury. The song is a reminder that anger can be messy, uncomfortable and difficult to control — but it can also become a powerful form of expression.

Half Dollar Dog are not trying to fit into the world as it is. They would rather turn up the volume and make their own noise.

“Oil on Fire” is available on streaming platforms.
